From Star Wars to Monty Python
They concern six cult productions: “Star Wars” (directed by George Lucas), “Monty Python: The Life of Brian” (Terry Jones), “Indiana Jones” (Steven Spielberg), “The English Patient” (Anthony Minghella), “The Last Legion” (Doug Lefler) and “Black Gold” (Jean-Jacques Annaud). Some of these successes may date back to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, but they are milestones. As for the last two feature films, shot between 2005 and 2010, they are among the all too rare international productions hosted in the country in recent decades.

So far, only the Star Wars site near Tataouine has received special attention, thanks to fans who have been contributing since 2014 to restore its settings and thanks to the organization of the Electronic Dunes Festival. Private guides also offer stopovers at other sites, but not all of them are designed to welcome visitors. Calls for tenders will therefore be launched in the coming months to provide training for their owners and operators.

The village of Ksar Hadada, where Georges Lucas filmed
“Reception areas, sanitary facilities, upgrading, renovations … the aid necessary for the development of the 18 selected sites will also be distributed under the aegis of German Cooperation and the European Union and as part of the” Promotion of sustainable tourism ”by“ Tounes Wijhetouna ”. This tourism diversification support program has a total of 50 million euros, which will be rolled out by 2024.

Monty Python’s Life Of Brian

Monty Python’s Life of Brian filming location: The Ribat, Monastir, Tunisia

You can visit the film’s ‘Holy Land’ settings in Tunisia, where most of the film was shot in the Ribat, the fortified monastery at Monastir, previously the setting for Franco Zeffirelli’s terminally pious TV production, Jesus of Nazareth With its endless maze of passages and high walls, the Ribat is open to the public (admission charge), including the striking tower, once used as a lookout to scan for hostile ships of the Byzantine fleet.

Once a fishing port, Monastir, with its airport, is the centre of the Golf of Hammamet’s tourist coast, though the town itself is quite small and some way from the cluster hotel complexes.

The Egyptian desert camp: Onk Jemal, Nefta, Tunisia

The desert camp of Count Almásy (Ralph Fiennes) is in the western Tunisian desert near to Nefta, not too far from the set of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, beneath the strange rock formation called Onk Jemal, known for obvious reasons as the Camel’s Neck. A guided desert safari with four-wheel drive vehicle is the only practical way to see the location.

The huge shimmering salt lake is Chott el Jerid, the dry lake you’ll need to cross to reach Nefta, and the cave where Katharine Clifton (Kristin Scott-Thomas) dies, which is near the old Bedu caravan post of Tozeur. Locations can be easily reached on expeditions or tours available to those based at the beach resorts of Hammamet, Sousse or Monastir.
